I was taken on a weekend to Balcardine and was introduced to Campbell Godley. I remember training around OOban, as Campbell arranged for a ceilidh band to play at the castle that night. We went into a butcher's as well as other shops. I was put into "The Gold Room", which had a four-poster and sheets that looked as old as the bed. When I learned that this had been the castle where the Glencoe Massacre had been planned I remember lying in the bed thinking "Ah well; you didn't get us all." (I am a MacDonald on my granny's side). I slept poorly, as I heard all sorts of strange noises during the night. When I reported this the next morning, Campbell blamed his large dog as getting into one of the secret passages that he said were all through the castle. He was an amazing character and I have never forgotten him.<br />Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17566316490043952548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3350432428721365043.post-88793695238110755812019-02-28T19:37:14.591-08:002019-02-28T19:37:14.591-08:00Used to call him Uncle Campbell. One of the last times i was there was around 1989/90 when i picked Campbell up from his house in Cumbernauld and took him to the Castle. Loved all the secret passages. My parents were at many a party night there in the Great Hall. He certainly was one of a kindAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04498539215379243954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3350432428721365043.post-77771748648122352102018-08-10T14:16:00.097-07:002018-08-10T14:16:00.097-07:00I also have fond memories of Campbell and the Cast...I also have fond memories of Campbell and the Castle. I think I remember you Simon. I think most of us that spent time at the castle did a bit of guiding and waiting tables. I remember the Ceilidhs and how Campbell loved getting people (tourists) to do the birdie dance. Some of the best memories.Alexishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14164546849067902223noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3350432428721365043.post-39147039641348913502018-02-06T14:49:00.951-08:002018-02-06T14:49:00.951-08:00Great to hear from you, Fizz-not-Fizz!! Barcaldin...Great to hear from you, Fizz-not-Fizz!! Barcaldine looks great, these days, but it's certainly not the same as it was. What days those were, when Campbell Godley was there! It's always a delight and a pleasure to hear from someone else who encountered the inimitable, unforgettable Campbell. So, very nice to make your acquaintance! All the best, SimonAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07579992524124124425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3350432428721365043.post-68016284326942302682018-02-06T09:58:33.444-08:002018-02-06T09:58:33.444-08:00PS I'm not Fizz, just using his computer!PS I'm not Fizz, just using his computer!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01526851704357143234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3350432428721365043.post-18647058870735796692018-02-06T09:58:04.327-08:002018-02-06T09:58:04.327-08:00A few years ago I looked at an ad for B & B at...A few years ago I looked at an ad for B & B at Barcaldine. The "historical background" said it had not been lived in by a Campbell for decades - mebbe even hundreds of years. Yes it was, I thought, Campbell Godley! I worked there one summer, cooking and guiding, and it was an unforgettable experience. We had a visit from the actor Ronald Fraser, who came down to the kitchen to chat and distract me while I was getting dinner! Thanks for the memories.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01526851704357143234noreply@blogger.com
